Animal classification is a way scientists organize and group animals based on their similarities and differences. Scientists put animals into groups called "categories" to help us understand them better. These categories include:
Kingdom: All animals belong to the kingdom Animalia because they are living things that move, breathe, and eat.
Phylum: Animals are further divided into different groups based on their body structures. For example, animals with backbones are in a group called Chordata, while animals without backbones are in different groups like Arthropoda (insects, spiders) or Mollusca (snails, octopuses).
Class: Within each phylum, animals are categorized into classes. Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish are classes of animals with backbones (vertebrates), while insects, arachnids, crustaceans, and others are classes of invertebrates (without backbones).
Order, Family, Genus, and Species: Animals are further classified into smaller groups, which help scientists understand their relationships more specifically. For example, humans belong to the order Primates, family Hominidae, genus Homo, and species sapiens.
